Ask most size charts for the smallest bra size and you'll get the same answer: 28AA, with a few brands going down to AAA. That's true, but it only tells you half the story. A bra size is two numbers, a band and a cup, and the smallest of each is not the same thing as a "small bra".
A 28 band is the smallest band most brands make. It can carry an AA cup, or it can carry an H cup. If you want to see how the two numbers fit together for every size, our bra size chart lays it out in inches and centimetres. Here's what "smallest" really means, and why it matters if your ribcage is small but your bust isn't.
What is the smallest bra size?
The smallest bra size you'll commonly find is 28AA. A few specialist brands also make AAA cups. Many Indian brands start higher: Wacoal India's smallest size, for example, is a 32A. And because cup volume grows with the band, a 28A holds less than a 34A, even though both say "A". So the smallest size is a pairing of two numbers, not a single label.
Smallest band vs smallest cup
The smallest band: usually 28
The band number is your ribcage, measured snugly just under your bust and rounded to an even number. The smallest band size most brands make is a 28. Plenty of others, especially high-street ranges, start at 30 or 32, so if your under-bust is around 27 or 28 inches you may simply not be on their chart.
The smallest cup: AA, sometimes AAA
The cup letter is the difference between your bust and your band. On the UK system most fuller-bust brands use, each letter is one more inch: A is one inch, B is two, C is three, and so on. AA and AAA sit below A, for a difference of less than an inch, which makes AA or AAA the smallest cup size you'll see on a label. Brands don't all draw that line in the same place, which is why you'll see AAA on some charts and not others.
Why a 28 band doesn't mean a small bra
Here's the part most guides skip. A cup letter only means something next to its band. Go down one band and up one cup letter, and the cup holds the same amount. These are called sister sizes.
So a 28FF holds the same cup volume as a 30F and a 32E. The bra is smaller around your ribcage, not smaller in the cup. A 28 band with a G or H cup is a small band and a full cup at the same time.
For reference, here are UK cup letters as bra sizes in order, smallest first:
- AAA
- AA
- A
- B
- C
- D
- DD
- E
- F
- FF
- G, then GG, H, HH, J and onwards

Small band, fuller bust: the size most shops skip
This is where a lot of people get let down. Say your under-bust is 28 inches and your bust is 35. Your size is a 28F: a small band with a fuller cup. It is not a 32 with a smaller cup letter, even though that's often what you'll be sold.
When a shop's range starts at a 30 or 32 band, it can't give you a 28. So the usual fix is to move you up a band and down a cup. The cup might hold roughly the right amount, but the band is now too loose. A loose band rides up your back, the straps start doing the lifting, and by evening your shoulders feel it. Your body isn't the problem here. The size range is.
At Scoop, the 28 band is part of the range, and it comes with fuller cups. The Envy Full Cup and the Ana Plunge, both by Panache, are made in a 28 band from DD all the way to J. You can browse by size too: 28F, 28FF, 28G and 28H.

How to check if you're a small band size
You don't need a full measuring session to get a first answer. Three quick steps:
- Step 1: Measure snugly around your ribcage, just under your bust, keeping the tape level all the way round.
- Step 2: Round to the nearest whole inch, then to an even number. 27 becomes a 28 band; 28 stays 28.
- Step 3: Measure the fullest part of your bust, subtract your band, and count one cup letter per inch.
If step 2 lands you on a 28, you're in the smallest band most brands make, whatever your cup letter turns out to be. For the full method, including the leaning measurement that helps with fuller cups, see how to measure your bra size at home.

Smallest bra size questions
Is 32 bra size small?
A 32 is a small-to-mid band. It fits a ribcage of about 31 to 32 inches. On its own it says nothing about your cup, because the band is only half the size. A 32 band comes with A cups and it comes with G cups and beyond. So 32 tells you where the band sits on a chart, not how big or small the bra is overall.
Which bra size is smaller, B or C?
On the same band, B is smaller: a 34B holds less than a 34C. Across different bands it can flip. A 32C holds the same cup volume as a 34B, because they're sister sizes. So when you're comparing letters, always look at the band number too. It's also why the smallest bra size isn't just a letter; it's a letter on a band.
Is 28 the smallest bra size?
For the band, usually yes. A 28 is the smallest band most brands make, and some ranges don't go below 30 or 32. A few specialist makers go smaller, but 28 is where most charts start. The cup on a 28 band can be anything from AA to well past H.
Is a 34A bra size small?
A 34A is a mid band with the smallest common cup letter. It holds the same cup volume as a 32B and a 36AA, its sister sizes. That's a fact about where it sits on a chart, not a judgement about anyone's body. If a 34A fits you well, it's simply your size.
Is A cup the smallest size?
No. AA and AAA cups sit below A, for a bust-to-band difference of less than an inch. Not every brand makes them, so you'll often see a chart start at A, but A isn't the bottom of the alphabet.
How often should I re-measure?
Every six to twelve months, and sooner after weight change, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or whenever your bras stop feeling right. Bodies change and bands stretch, so it's worth checking your band and your cup again.
So, the smallest bra size is usually 28AA. But for most people, the more useful question is which band is truly yours. Find your band first, then your cup, and don't let a chart that starts at 32 talk you out of a 28. If you'd like someone to check both numbers with you, our fitters can help.
